Most asked questions about newborn photography

Answered with care by a Sydney Newborn Photographer

If you’re searching for a Newborn photographer in Sydney, you’re probably in that beautiful in-between stage - excited, a little overwhelmed, and trying to make the right choices for your baby before they even arrive.

Firstly, you’re not alone in that.

Most parents I meet are navigating this exact moment: looking for someone they can trust to gently and safely capture their newborn in those early, fleeting days. And while it might feel like there are a lot of options out there for newborn photography in Sydney, what most families are really looking for isn’t just photos - it’s reassurance, calm, and someone who understands just how tender this stage truly is.

This guide is here to answer your most common questions about newborn photography sessions - from when to book, to what to expect on the day, and how relaxed, baby-led sessions actually work in real life.

No pressure. No perfection. Just clarity, care, and a little bit of guidance as you step into this new chapter.

When is the best time to book a newborn photoshoot?

Most parents are surprised to hear this, but the best time to book is actually during pregnancy.

Ideally, in your second or early third trimester.

This isn’t because baby needs to arrive on a strict schedule (that almost never happens!), but simply because it ensures you have a reserved space waiting for you when your baby arrives - no matter when they decide to make their entrance.

Newborn sessions are usually photographed within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are still naturally curled, sleepy, and happiest being gently settled and soothed.

But if you’ve already had your baby and are reading this thinking “we missed it,” please know this: you absolutely haven’t.

Older newborn sessions are just as beautiful - they simply have a different kind of magic. More eye contact, more stretches, more personality starting to shine through.

How far in advance should I book?

Most families book a few months ahead, often during pregnancy.

It’s not about locking in a rigid date - it’s about peace of mind.

We pencil in your due date, and then once your baby arrives, we adjust the timing. It’s flexible, calm, and designed to work around real life with a newborn (not the other way around).

Because those early weeks are unpredictable enough already. But don’t stress if bub has already arrived, contact me and I will do my best to fit you in!

What happens if my baby comes early or late?

The truth is, babies rarely follow calendars, and your session shouldn’t depend on that.

If your baby arrives early, late, or right on time, we simply adjust.

There is always space held around your due date so your session can happen when the timing feels right for your baby, not the booking system.

Do I need to do anything to prepare my baby?

This is where most parents breathe a little easier.

Simple answer: No.

You don’t need to keep your baby awake. You don’t need to “train” them for the session. You don’t need to worry if they’ve had a rough night.

In fact, the best sessions are the ones where you simply arrive as you are.

We feed, we settle, we pause when needed. Everything is guided by your baby’s rhythm, not a clock.

There is something very grounding about slowing down in those early days and simply letting your baby be held, soothed, and gently photographed just as they are.

What should we wear for newborn photos?

This is one of the most asked questions - especially for mums.

And I completely understand why.

You’ve just had a baby. Your body is healing. You’re probably running on very little sleep. And the idea of choosing outfits can feel like one more thing on an already full plate.

My gentle advice is always the same:

Soft, neutral tones. Comfortable fabrics. Nothing too “styled” or stiff.

Think creams, whites, soft earthy tones, linen, cotton - things that feel like you, just a little softer.

And most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable being held in, sitting in, feeding in.

Because these photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection.

Can siblings and partners be included?

Yes, absolutely! This isn’t just about a new baby.

It’s about a whole family learning to expand and hold space for someone new.

Older siblings don’t need to behave perfectly. Partners don’t need to know what to do with their hands. There is no expectation for anyone to perform.

Some of the most meaningful images come from the in-between moments - a toddler leaning in curiously, a dad quietly watching, a mother holding everyone together while still adjusting herself.

It’s real life, just gently paused.

How long does a newborn session take?

Newborn sessions are never rushed.

On average, they take around 2 hours, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less - depending entirely on your baby.

There will be feeding breaks, cuddles, settling time, and pauses whenever needed.

It’s a calm space where your baby leads the pace.

Where do newborn sessions take place?

My newborn sessions take place in my studio at Baulkham Hills or in the comfort of your home.

Studio sessions offer a calm, simple environment with soft light and everything ready to go.

In-home sessions feel deeply personal - your baby in their first home, your family in your own space, exactly as life is unfolding.

There’s no right or wrong choice here. It’s simply about what feels most natural for you in those early weeks.

Is newborn photography safe for my baby?

Yes - and this is always my highest priority. I have 8 years experience in newborn photography and my own 3 children. I want to re-iterate that safety is very important to me.

Every pose, every movement, every setup is guided by your baby’s comfort and safety first, not what you might see on pinterest.

There is never any forcing, stretching, or positioning that doesn’t feel natural for them. Most of the time, the safest and most beautiful images come from simply holding, wrapping, and gently settling your baby in ways they already love.

What if my baby cries or won’t settle?

Then we pause.

We feed. We cuddle. We slow everything down.

This is completely normal AND expected.

Newborn sessions are designed around real babies, not perfectly sleepy ones. There is always time, always patience, always space to reset.

Some of the most beautiful moments come after the unsettled ones - when baby finally melts into your arms and everyone exhales at once.

How much does newborn photography cost?

Newborn photography is often one of those things people look into carefully, because it’s not just a purchase - it’s a decision about preserving something that feels impossibly fleeting.

Most families invest in a session that includes both the experience and the finished artwork - the images you’ll come back to years from now when your baby is no longer so small.

Because what you’re really investing in isn’t just photos.

It’s remembering how this moment felt.

I have a range of packages to choose to suit every need.

When will we receive our photos?

After your session, I carefully go through each image and select the ones that best tell your story.

You’ll then be guided through choosing your favourites, and your final images are professionally edited and delivered with care.

As a guide, you usually have your digital images within 2-3 weeks.

Final thoughts

If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or even a little emotional reading this - that’s completely normal.

You’re in one of the most tender, fleeting chapters of your life.

And whether you decide to book a newborn session or not, I hope you find a way to hold onto it in some form - because these early days don’t stay small for long.

And one day, you’ll look back and realise how much life you were living in such a tiny moment.
